Technical Update
A Joint Council meeting was held on Monday December 8th between drivers and promoters to discuss proposals from both sides resulting from the BSCDA F2 AGM and the recent promoters meetings. Most of these matters were handed to the Technical Committee to deal with, which has resulted in the following Technical Committee Bulletin:-
Rule 202 : Ballast
The lamination of steel plates in the construction of the nerf rail is prohibited, and only one piece of 6mm plate can be used as protection for the tank and battery. This is to stop many pieces of 6mm plate being welded together with an air gap to be used as ballast. This rule will apply from January 1st 2010.
Rule 204 : Nerf rails
Nerf rails must not extend more than 2” (50mm) beyond the edge of the wheel on dry running wheels on either side, making the maximum width of the car 72” (1829mm) excluding the wheelguard.
Rule 206-8
To permit the repair of damaged cylinder heads, longer ball studs will be permitted-maximum of three per cylinder head, and these must be of standard pattern in design and material.
Pistons
From 31st December 2009 it will be permitted to overbore the Pinto block to plus 60 thou.
Rule 208 : Tyres
Yokohama tyres may not be treated with any chemical substance or treatment-not just softener. Tyres may not be recut or have the tread pattern altered by siping of the tread blocks, but the use of surform planes or mechanical buffing is acceptable to clean up feathered edges.
Rule 212 : Floor and firewall
It is strongly recommended that 2mm steel plate is used to protect the driver’s feet by welding it in the gap between the top and bottom chassis rails.
Rule 213 : Fuel
Any promoter or technical officer will have the right to supply fuel prior to a race to any car he may choose. This fuel will, of course, be in accordance with BSEN 228 as specified in the Rulebook. In the light of the accident at Cowdenbeath involving Dennis Middler, non return valves are recommended to be fitted in the fuel tank overflow pipe, to prevent fuel siphoning out when the car is at an angle. These are obtainable for around £20, and will be compulsory for 2010.
Rule 220 : Silencers
The Technical Officers have the right to confiscate, or inspect internally any silencer that has a significantly louder volume or engine note.
Tiliting cars
The definitive wording which will outlaw the ‘tilting’ cars at the end of 2009 is as follows-With the chassis placed on a level surface and viewed from the front or rear, the chassis floor, main rails, bumpers, nerf rails and roof plate must all lie in the same horizontal plane. The chassis rails and undercarriage must be of equal depth on either side of the car. The engine and seat must be at 90 degrees to this in an upright position.
Duratec
The Duratec engine regulations will be published in the 2009 Rulebook, and the engine will be acceptable for general use in 2010. Brisca F2 will govern the manufacture of Inlet manifolds and ignition packs.
